This painting hangs in the South Dakota State Capitol building in Pierre, SD. Vernon was Supreme Court Judge from 1944 to 1956. Frank Ashford could have painted this from a live sitting or a photograph. The painting is not dated so it’s hard to know if, in relation to Sickle’s career, he was still alive at the time of the painting. Ashford painted a few South Dakota dignitaries after 1955, but it is not known why this short spurt occurred. It is signed F. C. Ashford.
