This river scene is probably of the Jim River in Brown County, South Dakota. Frank Ashford’s family farm was located near the Jim, and he returned to it frequently throughout his life. It appears as if there are mountains or low hills in the background. If so, this certainly would not be in the Brown County area as it is nearly flat. There are however, cliffs that have eroded on the Jim, creating steep walls of clay. Ashford could be depicting the edge of a cliff, he could have just made up the mountains, or, perhaps they are trees in the far distance, treated to be “out of focus.” This is from a private collection and the size and date are not specifically known. Compare with Along the Jim, which is a similar view.
