Chief Seattle (Sealth) 1786-1866 was chosen chief by the Duwamish and Suquamish Indian tribes of Puget Sound. He was a successful military strategist and was helpful in negotiations between the Native Americans and the settlers. He signed the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855 ceding the area now known as Seattle to the United States.
This appears to have been commissioned by John F. Douglas of the Carnation Dairy company for the Pioneer Association. It may have been completed in the early 1940s.
