Charles Herreid was the fourth governor of South Dakota, and he practiced law in Aberdeen, SD. This painting resides in the Northern State University’s archives as part of their permanent collection. The painting was arranged and donated by the Pasque Boards of 1921-1928. Size is 30 x 36 and is signed F.C. Ashford. In a 1928 issue of the Exponent, an acknowledgment appears, honoring Herreid: It is with sincere regret that we briefly record herewith the passing of a life-long friend of the Northern State Teachers College, Honorable Charles N. Herreid. During the entire quarter century of the school’s existance, Ex-Governor Herreid has been one of the staunchest friends of the institution. In a very definite sense the institution is a monument to him as it was he who signed the first appropriation bill for the school, March 6, 1901, and exactly two years later, to the very date, he signed the second bill. While the act of 1899 established the school, this was only an opening wedge and accomplished nothing until the appropriation act of 1901. Mr. Herreid used all his political influence in behalf of the school and in one of his messages to the legislature he made a special appeal for its maintenance.
